Let’s Talk Lifestyle: Responsibility

Hey, y’all! I’ve been thinking quite a bit about ownership and responsibility lately. So that’s what today’s topic is about. This post is going to be shorter than normal, just a heads up. Anyways, pull up a chair and let’s talk responsibility.

For some reason, my mind has been on that Will Smith video

Actually, they’re a series of videos that were on his Instagram story a while back that were compiled into one. But they talk about the difference between fault and responsibility. If you haven’t seen them, go check them out. The compilation really makes you think about why ownership is crucial in our lives.

Responsibility is the state or fact of having a duty to deal with something or of having control over someone. For our purposes, the person in question is us. There are many times where we may try to shirk ownership of something because “it’s not our fault”. And while that bit about the fault might be true, it is still our duty to handle business.

We might have been caused heartache, let ignorance or stupidity get the best of us, or been dealt a shitty hand by life. But at the end of the day, it’s up to us to take ownership of our lives and strive to live better, do better, and be better.

Our lives are our responsibility

At the end of the day, it’s not realistic or helpful to expect people to come into our lives and save us. Like, sure relationships and friendships are important, but the people we surround ourselves with aren’t gonna live our lives for us. I know that I’ve fallen victim to that mentality, where I’ve actively ignored things happening in my life hoping someone would take care of them. But on top of being irresponsible, that way of thinking is ridiculously unfair. People have their own shit to deal with, so most of the time we’ve got to handle our own business. And that’s ok.

It’s ok because that’s what life is about. Most of our experience on Earth is about the journey, not the destination. Jim Rohn said, “Become a millionaire not for the million dollars, but for what it will make of you to achieve it.” Life is about the process of taking on challenges, growing, and leveling up. It’s about seeing what kind of positive impact we can make in our short time here. We have a chance to impact change, in whatever way we can, while we’re alive. But first, we have to grab life by the horns and take responsibility for the outcome of our existence, in as much as we are able.

Even if things are going wrong, say “good“, and keep it pushing. Because if we want to have a better life and make others’ lives better, then we can’t give in and can’t give up.

I want to thank you for talking humans with me today. How do you show responsibility in your life? Leave your answer in the comments below. Don’t forget to subscribe and share. And don’t forget to talk humans with someone this week. Catchya later!!

  1. Hey David, thanks for bringing this up! One of the biggest ways I try to take responsibility in my life is by deciding if my decisions (nice, right?) are actually valid for me or if I’m full of it and need to reevaluate. Another point is making sure I see the forest for the trees as much as possible. So many times someone will say they didn’t see the forest for the trees and they ended up being hurt or disappointed. After having in been, or in some cases ignoring the forest, I decided to take responsibility for my future by paying full attention to the collections of the past and present. How else can one acknowledge and avoid a pattern.

    1. Hey Krystal, thanks for reading! And I LOVE that you brought up seeing the forest for the trees. It’s so easy to get caught up in minutia and forget the big picture. And making sure that our goals are actually OURS is crucial! What works for someone else might not work for you. It has to be adapted to suit us!
